Times Have Changed
The job market is not what we were hoping for or
expecting, but we are being asked for more patience. In answer to a question about existing
economic conditions, this is what we heard:
“I came
in and the jobs had been just falling, like off a cliff. I came in and they
kept falling for 11 months and then we turned around and we’re coming back. And
that’s progress. And if you’re going to suggest to me that somehow the day I
got elected – somehow jobs should immediately turn around, why that would be
silly.
"It
takes a while to get things turned around. We were in a recession, we were
losing jobs every month, we’ve turned around. We want to keep that going to the
extent we can.”
Can we accept this statement? In 2006, Mitt Romney certainly was hoping
that the public would. Those were his
words at the time, a direct quote. I’m
betting that he feels differently now, but it wouldn’t be the first or the last
issue on which his position has changed.
Politics will never
change.
